Florida Man Accused of Cyberstalking Woman, Stealing Dead Son’s Ashes

Relationships can become bitter when they end unexpectedly. Many people become jilted after a breakup, but a Florida man took things to another level after his girlfriend broke up with him. Not only did he start stalking the woman but he also stole a teddy bear containing the ashes of the woman’s cremated son.

The 31-year-old man from Flagler County was arrested on August 1 and is now facing six felony charges, including cyberstalking, accessing an electronic device without authority, using tracking devices and apps without consent, and maliciously threatening to injure another person.

The man and woman met through Facebook Dating and were together for only three weeks before the woman decided to end the relationship. This upset the man. He allegedly refused to accept the breakup and began harassing the woman by contacting her multiple times. He continued to follow her around town despite her telling him to stop.

When the couple broke up, the woman kicked the man out of the Red Roof Plus, where she had been living. However, the man persisted and would show up at the hotel and the woman’s workplace. He was even caught stalking her at a restaurant where she was eating with a friend.

The woman obtained a protective injunction against the man, but that did not stop him. He continued to make threats against the woman.

Cyberstalking After a Breakup

Cyberstalking after a breakup is an increasingly common form of harassment that can leave victims feeling unsafe long after a relationship ends. While occasional attempts to reconnect are not typically illegal, unwanted online behavior that causes fear or emotional distress may cross the line into cyberstalking or other criminal conduct.

Here are some ways cyberstalking can occur after a breakup:

  • Repeated unwanted messages. Sending constant texts, emails, direct messages, or social media messages after someone has clearly asked for no further contact can become harassment.
  • Monitoring social media activity. A former partner may repeatedly monitor posts, stories, check-ins, and comments to keep track of someone’s daily activities. Creating fake accounts to bypass blocks or privacy settings is another common tactic.
  • Sharing private information. Posting private photos, videos, home addresses, phone numbers, or other personal information online without consent can expose victims to safety risks.
  • GPS and device tracking. Some individuals secretly use location-sharing apps, hidden GPS trackers, or spyware installed on phones or computers to monitor an ex-partner’s movements.
