Man Arrested After Uploading Child Porn to Dropbox

Many people don’t think about the activities they do online. They think nobody can see what they’re doing, but the truth is that everyone can. So take note that if you’re uploading illegal photos to a common platform such as Dropbox, you better think twice.
This is what happened to a Florida man. The 30-year-old man was arrested on May 8 after he was caught uploading child sex abuse material to Dropbox.
Dropbox reported child sexual abuse material had been uploaded to an account in Collier County. The man was the account holder. Law enforcement officials worked with the Southwest Florida INTERCEPT Task Force and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. They were able to execute a search warrant at the man’s home, located on 25th Avenue in Golden Gate Estates.
Detectives found several electronic devices that were used for evidence. The man was charged with five counts of child porn possession. The investigation is still underway.
How Child Porn is Being Shared
In the past, people would use chat rooms and escort websites to share child pornography images and videos. Now, peer-to-peer networks and cloud apps are being used to upload and store data. Peer-to-peer networks are decentralized computer networks where devices, called peers, share resources directly with each other without a central server. Each peer acts as both a client and a server, enabling the sharing of files.
Peer-to-peer networks were not used uniquely for sharing porn though. In fact, the majority of was comprised of non-pornographic content, such as music, movies, and TV shows. While people have turned to Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu to watch movie and TV content, people still use peer-to-peer networks like Limewire and BitTorrent to upload and store child porn.
Peer-to-peer networks are beneficial for users. Users like that once they are connected, they can upload or download files from one another without disclosing much personal information. The P2P web servers are big enough to store millions of files. Perpetrators like the fact that law enforcement officials won’t go after the millions of people participating in this activity. They simply can’t.
People are looking for applications that can hold a large number of files. That’s why many people use Dropbox, Google, and other apps. Some people still use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to share child porn files, but these are especially unsafe options.
