Cyberstalking with AirTags

In the past, people interested in stalking someone would have to physically follow the person around. Nowadays, you can stalk someone from the comfort of your own home. Technology such as computers has made this easy. But many people are going beyond this and using Apple AirTags.

Cyberstalking using Apple AirTags has become a concerning issue due to their small size and tracking capabilities. While AirTags were designed to help users locate lost items, stalkers are misusing them to track people without their consent. The victims may not even know about it for a long time.

This everyday gadget causes fear in victims, whose every move is being tracked by these tiny devices. AirTags were designed for convenience; instead they are causing emotional damage to victims. These devices can be easily used to track not only objects but people as well, posing a significant threat to personal safety and peace of mind.

Apple AirTags rely on Bluetooth and do not connect to WiFi networks. However, they use other Apple devices to locate them, which means they are only able to send a location when other Apple devices are nearby. An iPhone must be within 50 feet of the AirTag to detect it. However, any iPhone within range of an AirTag will relay its location to its owner, allowing AirTag owners to track their devices over great distances (as long as someone with an iPhone moves within range of the AirTag). Similar devices tend to use GPS tracking, which provides a more consistent live location.

But the main issue is the impact of stalking. Victims often share tales of finding an AirTag hidden in their car or bag. This is a terrifying sign that someone is tracking their every move. This surveillance is done without consent, causing perpetual anxiety and fear in victims.

The challenge lies in preventing the misuse of these devices for invasive tracking in the first place. Unwanted AirTag tracking is a real and growing problem. Women are often the victims of this harassment, although politicians, journalists, activists, and business leaders may also be stalked in this method.

Apple has always provided iPhone owners with tools to help prevent AirTag abuse. Android users aren’t so lucky, although Apple is now taking steps to provide these users with more protection.

The good news is that while they offer unwanted tracking safety features, AirTags have strong privacy protections. They don’t store any location data or location history. Instead, they relay this data through Apple’s Find My network.
