Hospital Employee Arrested on Child Porn Charges

People from all walks of life engage in child pornography crimes. Sometimes there is interest in these images and while many think they will be disgusted by what they see, many cannot look away. They desire more egregious photos and images, until they get arrested for their actions.
This is what happened to a hospital employee. An employee at Tampa General Hospital was recently arrested for possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material.
An investigation by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office into the employee resulted in detectives discovering 79 images and videos of child sexual abuse material in the possession of the employee, a 42-year-old man. The man had also taken inappropriate photos and videos of himself in operating rooms and patient care areas. He then distributed these images and videos to others on social media.
According to investigators, the material in the man’s possession included children under the age of 5. The images and videos showed explicit abuse. Because of this, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has stressed that the man could face enhanced penalties.
The man is currently in police custody. He faces 79 felony counts. The man is no longer working at General Hospital. The hospital is cooperating with authorities on the investigation. The investigation is still underway. It is possible that the man could face additional charges as police continue to investigate.
Overview of Florida Child Porn Crimes
Under Florida Statute § 847.001(3), possession of child pornography includes having control, possession or access to any image or video depicting a minor engaged in sexual activity. A conviction is classified as a third-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine per image.
Distribution Charges in Florida
- Third-degree felony. Distributing child pornography can result in up to five years in prison, five years of probation, and fines up to $5,000.
- Second-degree felony. Possession of three or more copies may indicate intent to distribute, elevating the charge and increasing penalties.
- Repeat offenders. Those with prior felonies may face harsher sentences under Florida’s enhanced penalty guidelines.
Child pornography offenses may also fall under federal jurisdiction, especially if activities involve interstate communication or distribution. Federal charges often result in longer prison sentences and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration.
