Man Arrested on Child Porn Charges After AI Chatbot Tip
Artificial intelligence (AI) is sometimes used to commit crimes but it is also used to help law enforcement officials arrest those who commit crimes. A good example of this is a recent child pornography case in Florida.
A 25-year-old Broward County man has been arrested on multiple felony charges after investigators alleged he used an AI chatbot to create and possess child sexual abuse images.
According to court records, the investigation began in May when an AI chatbot integrated into the social media platform X generated a report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The information was then forwarded to the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which launched an investigation.
Authorities obtained search warrants for the suspect’s X account and residence before executing a search on July 10. The suspect was taken into custody during the operation.
Investigators allege the images were manipulated versions of real photos depicting young girls between the ages of 5 and 10. According to the probable cause affidavit, the suspect admitted the account belonged to him, acknowledged altering the images, and said he had searched online for similar material.
Defense counsel argued that the suspect has significant physical and cognitive disabilities that affected his understanding of his actions and has requested that the case be transferred to Broward County’s mental health court for a competency evaluation. However, investigators stated that the suspect was evaluated and found competent to proceed at the time of his arrest.
The man, from Parkland, was arrested on 11 felony counts, including five counts of generating child sexual abuse material, five counts of possessing child sexual abuse material, and one count of compiling child pornography on a computer. His bond was set at $110,000. He was released from jail after posting the bond. As of the latest court hearing, prosecutors had not yet formally filed charges in the case.
